Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in Afghanistan

As of 8 November 2025, a total of 1,438 suspected cases of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) with 99 deaths, have been reported in Afghanistan in 2025. The highest cumulative incidence of suspected CCHF cases have been reported from Kabul, followed by Kapisa, Kunduz, Balkh, and Kandahar. Wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) has been detected in an environmental sample taken from wastewater in Hamburg on 6 October 2025. There have been no reports to date of any clinical or suspected human cases of poliomyelitis in Germany, with the last cases recorded over 30 years ago.
